Arrow: Haunted Recap & Review

Constantine is back! And all was right in the world again. The latest episode of Arrow was quite possibly the best episode of the season so far and maybe even longer for the ones who feel that the show has lost its way. Even still, it was something to remember or dare I say magical. Hint, hint… @CW. The Green Arrow enlists the magical powers of Constantine to help bring back Sara’s soul, Damien Darhk sends Captain Lance on a revelatory errand, Felicity finds out Ray is still alive, and more on Arrow: “Haunted.” Spoiler alert.

Sara’s Bloodlust

SarasBloodlust

Last week on Arrow, Oliver publicly declared his mayoral candidacy in Star City, Oliver and Captain Lance reached an agreement that involved Lance using his relationship with Darhk to help the Green Arrow take down Darhk and his cronies, and Felicity learned that her ex Ray Palmer/The Atom left her an encrypted message before he died. Oh, and Sara came back to Star City—or at least her body did. This week’s episode picked up right where we left off, starting with our dear crazed Sara Lance, who was able to break out of the basement she was held captive in and began to terrorize Star City. The one thing all of her victims had in common: they all looked freakishly similar to Thea, short dark brown bomb and all. Sara’s soul may have been MIA, but her memory was well intact as she clearly remembered who to direct her bloodlust towards. And for good reason; Thea was the one that killed her. Just saying.

Naturally, with Sara running around town wreaking havoc—oh, the force was indeed strong with that one, the bloodlust force that is—it was only a matter of time before Oliver and the rest of the gang found out about Sara. Not that Oliver could say anything about keeping secrets—heck he’s the king of keeping secrets from the people he cares about—but they all had a much bigger issue to deal with: how in the world to help Sara. Enter an old friend of Oliver, John Constantine.

Dabbler of the Dark Arts

Constantine

The first time Oliver and Constantine met was back on the dreaded island Lian Yu when Constantine was captured by Oliver’s superior, Reiter, as he attempted to search the island for an important ancient relic. And as usual, whenever Constantine is involved, we’re pretty much guaranteed two things: adventure and magic. Our reintroduction to the cult favorite, post the cancellation of his own series on NBC, did not disappoint. True to the DC Comics character depiction, Constantine on Arrow was every bit of the Constantine we’re all familiar with: you know, “dabbler of the dark arts.” His words, not mine.

Despite getting off to a rocky start—Constantine taking Oliver hostage at gunpoint—the two were able to forge an unlikely friendship in a short period of time; all the while helping Constantine to achieve his goal of appropriating the Orb of Horus, which is basically an ancient spell book. And though Constantine did offer his new friend the opportunity to leave with him and was politely declined, he did however manage to give Oliver a parting gift that I’m guessing will play a significant role in a forthcoming confrontation between the Green Arrow and Damien Darhk, a tattoo that probably possesses a mystical spell of protection. But, we shall see.

Back to present day, Oliver decides to give his old friend Constantine a ring to ask for his help with the whole evil-undead Sara situation. Constantine, feeling like he owed Oliver for once saving his life on the island, was eager to lend a helping hand. After assessing the situation, he explained to Oliver and the gang that Sara needed a restitution or restoration of the soul to the body, all the while managing to sneak in a not-so-subtle flirtation with all of the ladies. With Oliver and Laurel along for the ride, Constantine goes to the scene of the crime in the other realm; that is where Sara was revived. While Oliver and Laurel, I mean the Green Arrow and the Black Canary work together to pull a seemingly unharmed Sara from the mirage of the Lazarus Pit in the underworld, Constantine was left to fend off underworld/demonic attackers, using his magic, of course. With Sara’s soul successfully restored to her body, they make the trip back to the world of the living, and once again we say goodbye to Constantine. Maybe this time there may be hope for a return of Constantine in the Arrowverse. Just a suggestion—ahem, @CW.

The Secret Message

SecretMessage

Speaking of returning, Felicity finally got the nerve to listen to Ray Palmer’s message that tech genius Curtis Holt was able to decrypt. The message was actually Ray Palmer/The Atom himself relaying to his ex/former co-worker that he is indeed still alive and needs her help. Ok, can we say yet another setup for the DC’S Legends of Tomorrow?

Also, on Arrow this week, an errand for Damien Darhk ends up being quite revelatory for Captain Lance, who enlists the help of team Green Arrow. As it turns out, Darhk wanted Captain Lance to delete some secret files, files that just so happened to contain information about John Diggle’s deceased brother, Sergeant Andrew “Andy” Diggle, and it wasn’t good, either. Apparently, Andy was a bad boy, a very bad boy. In fact, that’s why Darhk’s associated HIVE organization took him out—Darhk didn’t like having a competing crime lord in Afghanistan—so he did what anyone in his position would have, he eliminated the threat to his business.

Damien Darhk’s influence is growing in Star City just as Oliver Queen/the Green Arrow ‘s campaign to clean up the city takes a strategic turn, hopefully for the better. The plot continues to thicken. Arrow airs Wednesdays at 8:00pm EST on CW.
